Before I painted BGs on The Iron Giant, I got to help develop this movie in the early stages with concept sketches and painted illustrations that contributed to the successful greenlight pitch. Later I helped define the look of picture after Art Director, Steve Pilcher, came on board. After I completed my work on The Iron Giant, Steve tasked me to learn how to marbleize paper to be used as subtle biological textures in the backgrounds. I really enjoyed this process of spattering ink on top of a deep tray of water and chemicals, manipulating the organic design, and then placing paper on top to capture a perfect print. I made over 100 prints, but unfortunately I do not have any copies of those.
